This creamy, indulgent mac and cheese recipe takes comfort food to the next level with a perfectly crispy crust that adds just the right amount of texture. It’s the perfect balance of rich, cheesy goodness inside with a satisfying crunch on top. Just one bite and you’ll be hooked!

Ingredients

  • 1 - 16 ounce package elbow macaroni (or any bite sized pasta you have on hand)
  • 1/4 butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 tsp white pepper
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/4 Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3 cups shredded Cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
  2. Cook pasta according to directions on package.
  3. Melt 1/4 cup butter over medium heat, add flour. Stir and continue to cook on medium for another 3-4 minutes. Add thyme, cayenne pepper, and white pepper. Cook and stir another minute, then add milk 1 cup at a time. Stir until smooth between each addition. Heat just to a simmer.
  4. Stir in Worcestershire, Dijon and salt. Simmer on medium-low heat until thickened, whisking often. Remove from heat, add 2 1/2 cups of Cheddar. Stir to melt and combine. Stir in the cooked pasta.
  5. Transfer to a casserole dish. Mix bread crumbs and 1 tbsp melted butter, sprinkle over the macaroni mixture. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of Cheddar on top.
  6. Bake approximately 20 minutes or until the bread crumbs and Cheddar are golden brown.

Tip: For something a little different, try using 1/2 Cheddar and 1/2 Havarti or Provolone. If you're in a hurry, skip the bread crumb and cheese topping. It's equally delicious.
